Description

Marriage counselor Eli Fox has always been led by the commander -- a persona within his mind who guides him through his waking thoughts. Eli trusts his commander implicitly, for he has proven to be a protector and master strategist. At the historic Stoneport Institute of Psychiatry, Eli supervises psychiatric resident, Meagan Rush, as they conduct sessions with troubled couples, study intimacy between the sexes, and debate the interplay of Eastern and Western psychology. But when they decide to become their own interpersonal experiment, honesty gives rise to passion and reopens childhood wounds in both of them, triggering a devastating chain of events.

Worse yet, the Institute is in the midst of an HMO takeover led by the oily Clayton Beauregard, whose main interest is in maximizing company profits. In an effort to reduce claims, his company engages in unethical practices with innocent patients as its victims. He tries to restrict patient care, trivialize the practice of psychotherapy, and suppress evidence of company culpability in a tragic suicide. As chaos swirls around him, Eli is forced to rely on an innate intelligence well beyond the range of his commander.

More than two dozen characters populate this novel, including therapists, patients, and townspeople. Dr. Nigel Charles is compiling an encyclopedia of the mind and fearlessly defends the lineage of the field of psychotherapy. Female Sensei Dakota Wrenn, Meagan's martial arts instructor and Eli's sailing guide, guards a deeper wisdom and finally leads them to find their sanity.
